Suniye Kahiye - Baaton Baaton Mein (1979)

Posted by Nerdyy

Yes it has my first crush Tina Munim looking gorgeous as always; but what lyrics, what a composition and beautifully sung. This song truly brings out the wondrous joy of conversations with a friend :)

suniye kahiye kahiye suniye kehte sunte
baaton baaton mein pyar ho jayega

yeh pehli nazar ka uff kya asar hai
tumhari kasam dagmagayen se hum hai
nehin jispe kaboo yeh hai kaisa jadoo
mere liye to sach bhi bharam hai

ghata chand bijlee barkha pawan mein
shamil ho tum meri har kalpana mein
tareef meri itni karo na
udhne lagoon main kahin asmaan mein

tumhari ada hai woh sabse judaa hai
chaha hai tumko isi waastey
hum bekhabar hai tum besabar ho
uspe hain dekho naye raaste

Naa Jaane Kaise - Badaltey Rishtey (1979)

Posted by Nerdyy

This song was the surprise hit of 1979 - but you have to listen to it multiple times - it really grows on you especially the lyrics and the two male voices. Laxmikant Pyarelals music is kinda unobtrusive and OK.

The song is about the vagaries of relationships, and how things can change in an instant. We have all been through times when someone just ups and leaves and you are left scratching your head or on a more positive note some seemingly innocuous words or actions with someone who was a total stranger minutes ago leads to meaningful and wonderfully deep and emotional friendships. This song is for all of us that share these painful and happy memories :D

na jaane kaise pal mein badal jaate hai
yeh duniya ke badalte rishte
kya jaane kaise rangon mein dhal jaate hai
yeh duniya ke badaltey rishte

judhkar kahin dil jorh de toote to dil tor jaate hai yeh
yeh phool bankar hai khilte kahin kahin dil mein kaante chubhate hai yeh
jaane kahan kis mor pe deke dagha dil ko chal jaate hai
yeh duniya ke badaltey rishtey

rishte kabhi tootey kahan jo toot jayen woh rishte nehin
chhupi hai udaasi ke peeche hansi dabi dard mein bhi khushi hai kahin
sach to hai yeh bas pyar se jeevan humare badal jaate hai
yeh duniya ke badaltey rishte

Baahon Mein Teri Masti Ke Ghere - Kaala Paththar (1979)

Posted by Nerdyy

Based(partially) on Lord Jim, this movie was the start of Yash Chopra delivering flop after flop, until Chandni. The songs in this movie are excellent especially this and Ek Raasta Hai Zindagi. This song has a great movement and rhythm to it and is excellently sung by Rafi and Lata. Sahir Ludhianvis lyrics and the music of Rajesh Roshan are also very good.

khwaabon mein jisko tanhaa javaani
barson se taqti thi tu vahi hai
chhoone se jiske seene mein meri
lau jaag sakti thi tu vahi hai
kuchh khwaab mere kuchh khwaab tere
yun milte jaate hain dil khilte jaate hain
lab gun gunaate hai

bikhraa ke zulfen jhuk jaao mujhpe
milne do saayaa tapte badan ko
maine hamesha teri amaanat
samjha hai apne jaan aur tan ko
tu saath mere main saath tere
roohon ke roohon se
jismon ko jismon se
sadiyon ka naata hai

Aanewala Pal - Golmaal (1979)

Posted by Nerdyy

One of my all time favorite songs - the lyrics (Gulzar) the music (R D Burman) and the voice - ohh the voice (Kishore Kumar) - this song apparently is not just my favorite :P What better way to end my evening of posting than with this song :)

Happy listening ;)

aanewala pal jaane wala hai
ho sake to isme zindagi bita lo
pal jo yeh jaanewala hai

ik baar waqt se lamha gira kahin
wahan dastaan mili lamha kahin nehin
thorasa hansake thorasa rulake pal yeh bhi jaanewala hai :)

Chal Kahin Door Nikal Jayen - Doosra Aadmi (1977)

Posted by Nerdyy

When you listen to this song or watch it - you feel like it is about two lost and wandering souls magically finding each other and letting themselves drown in the moment and flow with the feelings - how amazing it is to imagine this playing out :) Lata Rafi and Kishore make this a wonderful song :D

kyaa mausam hai ae deewaane dil
chal kahin door nikal jaayen
koi hamdam hai chaahat ke qaabil
to kis liye ham sambhal jaayen

jhoom ke jab jab kabhi do dil gaate hain
chaar kadam chalte hain phir kho jaate hain
aisaa hai to kho jaane do mujh ko bhi aaj
ye kyaa kam hai do pal ko raahi
arre mil jaayen bahal jaayen

yeh mastiyaan yeh bahaar dil ho chalaa beqaraar
main girtaa hoon mujhe thaam lo
bheege labon se meraa naam lo
duniyaa ko ab do nazar kyun aayen hum
itne qareeb aao ke ek ho jaayen hum

khoye se hum, khoyi si manzil
achchhaa hai sambhal jaayen

Aap ki Aankhon Mein Kuch - Ghar (1978)

Posted by Nerdyy

Gulzar and R D  Burman have collaborated to provide us with some of the most memorable Hindi songs ever - this is another song that makes you go *sigh*. The lyrics are deeply meaningful and the composition is just pitch perfect :)

aap ki aankhon mein kuch mehki huwi si raaz hai
aap se bhi khubsoorat aap ke andaaz hai

lab hiley to mogrey ke phool khilte hai kahin
aap ki aankhon mein kya saahil bhi milte hai kahin
aap ki kahmoshiyaan bhi aap ki aawaz hai :)

One of Mukesh's last great hits - this song was released a year after his death. What a song - again composed by R D Burman.

tumhari reshmi zulfon mein dilke phool khilte the
kahin phoolon ke mausam mein kabhi hum tum bhi milte they
purani woh mulaqaatein humme sone nehin deti :)

Ek Din Bik Jayega Maati Ke Mol - Dharam Karam (1975)

Posted by Nerdyy

Wonder of wonders - R D Burman composing music for a Raj Kapoor film (albeit directed by Randhir Kapoor, a clos e friend of RD - hence that would explain it) and getting Mukesh to sing what is to many the quintessential Raj Kapoor song. Wonderful philosophical lyrics it speaks about leaving behind your life's work for others to savor.

anhonee path mein kaante lakh bichhaye
honee to phir bhi bichra yaar milaye
yeh birha yeh doori do pal ki majboori
phir koi dilwaala kahe ko ghabrayen
dhara jo behti hai milke rehti hai
behti dhara ban ja fir duniya se dol

parde ke peeche baithi saanwal gori
thaam ke tere mere man ki dori
yeh dori na chhoote yeh bandhan na toote
bhor hone wali hai ab raina hai thodi
sar ko jhukaya kya baitha hai yaar
gori se naina jor fir duniya se dol :D

Babumoshai !! This song was originally a Bengali song composed by the same Salil Chaudhry but sung by Hemant Kumar - either way what an amazing song sung by Mukesh :D

kabhi yunhi jab huwi bojhal saansein
bhar aayee baithe baithe jab yunhi aankhein
tabhi machalke pyar se chalke
chhoowen koi mujhe par nazar na aaye

kahin to yeh dil kabhi mil nehin paate
kahin se nikal aaye janmon ke naate
ghani thi uljhan bairi apna man
apna hi hoke sahe dard paraye

Kisi Raah Mein Kisi Mor Par - Mere Humsafar (1970)

Posted by Nerdyy

There are some songs that just take your breath away - this one has sure done it for me. A brilliantly composed song by Kalyanji Anandji, and sung with a lot of feeling by Mukesh and Lata. Jeetendra kind of ruins the beauty of the song - but oh well - theres still Sharmila :D

tera rang saaya bahaar ka tera roop aaina pyaar ka
tujhe aa nazar mein chhupa loon main tujhe lag na jaaye kahin nazar
mere humsafar mere humsafar

tera saath hai to hai zindagi tera pyaar hai to hai roshni
kahaan din ye dhal jaaye kya pata kahaan raat ho jaaye kya khabar
mere humsafar mere humsafar

Tumse Milke Aisa Laga - Parinda (1989)

Again no surprise this song would show up in my 10 must hear songs - beautiful melody (albeit heavily inspired by "When I need you" made famous by Leo Sayer), beautiful lyrics, beautifully sung and above all Madhuri Dixit - need I say more. The movie was by far the best gangsta movie I have seen from Bollywood.

tumse milke aisa laga
tumse milke armaan huwe poore dilke
ae meri jaan-e-wafa :D

Ek Pyar Ka Naghma Hai - Shor (1972)

Posted by Nerdyy

The song that always leaves me speechless and sends chills down my spine :D The lyrics by Santosh Anand, the music by Laxmikant Pyarelal, and the impeccable singers Lata and Mukesh. If I had to narrow down my choices to 2 songs rather than 10, this song would be one of the two. I'll let the song and the lyrics speak for themselves.

ek pyar ka naghma hai maujon ki rawani hai
zinadagi aur kuch bhi nehin teri meri kahani hai

kuch pakar khona hai kuch khokar paana hai
jeevan ka matlab to aana aur jaana hai
do pal ke jeevan se ik umr churani hai
zindagi aur kuch bhi nehin teri meri kahani hai

tu dhaar hai nadiya ki main tera kinara hoon
tu mera sahara hai main tera sahara hoon
ankhon mein samandar hai ashaon ka paani hai
zindagi aur kuch bhi nehin teri meri kahani hai

toofan ko aana hai aakar chale jaana hai
badal hai yeh kuch pal ka chhaakar dhal jaana hai
parchhaiyan reh jaati reh jaati nishaani hai
zindagi aur kuch bhi nehin teri meri kahani hai

View from my deck of an apricot tree in full bloom at a neighbors house - for a more romantic image imagine the power wires dont exist. Of course with the beauty of spring in bloom comes the nuisance (at least for me) of allergies - achoooooo :D. In the fall the tree is loaded with hundreds of apricots that literally fall to the ground unused - I've always thought of someday sneaking into that house and stealing some fruit :D ... and yes I updated with a better picture - the previous one was a morning pic this is an afternoon pic :D

This song - the music and the lyrics seperately and together transports me far far away flying in the clouds or sailing on the ocean :D The words just stay with you forever and Asha is just Asha. Not to mention the fabulous tune - who else but R D Burman.

tumne to aakash bichhaya mere nange paon mein zameen hai
paake bhi tumhare arzoo ho shayad zindagi aise haseen hai
aarzoo mein behne do pyaasi hoon main pyaasi rehne do

halke halke kohre ke dhuen mein shayad aasamaan tak aa gayi hoon
teri do nigaahon ke sahaare dekho to kahan tak aa gayi hoon
kohre mein behne do pyaasi hoo main pyaasi rahane do

For those of you that dont know me that well I'm also a (somewhat) fanatical sports fan. For the last 15 -20 years or so I've concentrated on mostly football (the American version) and hockey (the one played on ice - also known as Canada's national pastime). Football season is still a few months away, but the NHL - National Hockey League is almost at the Stanley Cup playoffs stage. For those of you that have never watched a hockey game (on ice) - it is the fastest and most exciting sport you can ever watch. And yes - for those of us that love blood and gore - there is a LOT of fighting in hockey games and I mean real fistfights, not to mention unbelievable hits on players - well you just have to watch it to experience it. The point of this post is to salute the accomplishments of my favorite hockey team - the Chicago Blackhawks. This year they won the Presidents Trophy for the best regular season record among all teams. The Presidents trophy does come with a form of a curse in the sense that most times the team that wins this doesnt win the ultimate prize - The Stanley Cup. But given that the Hawks did win the Cup two years ago, I'm not that worried about whether the curse will come true again or not. And oh yes - the other team that I used to support - the Dallas Stars did win the Presidents Trophy and the Stanley Cup in the same year - 1999.

Pyar Deewana Hota Hai - Kati Patang (1970)

Posted by Nerdyy

The fifth (in no particular order) of my 10 must-hear songs is a Rajesh Khanna classic. This was not the most popular song in the music charts of that time (and no I did not listen to music charts in 1971 LOL ) but in the 80s this was definitely the Kati Patang song that would be requested the most on the previously mentioned Vividh Bharati channel. Beautifully composed by R D Burman and beautifully sung by Kishore Kumar - this song hits all the spots - even the ones you didnt know existed :D

shama kahe parwane se pare chala jaa
meri tarah jal jayega yehan nehin aa
woh nehin sunta jisko jal jaana hota hai

rahe ki sau pardon mein darre sharam se
nazar aji lakh churaye koi sanam se
aa hi jaata hai jispe dil aana hota hai

suno kisi shayar ne yeh kaha bohut khoob
mana kare duniya lekin mere mehboob
woh chhalak jaata hai jo paimaana hota hai

A while ago I had read an article in some newspaper where the author was once asked if they had the time left on this earth to listen to10 songs which ones would they choose. The previous song that I posted - Kya Hua Tera Wada would definitely be one of my 10. This current song, beautifully tuned by Shiv Kumar Sharma the santoor maestro and Hari Prasad Chaurasia the flute maestro, with its haunting lyrics, the poetry recited by Amitabh and the voice of Lata Mangeshkar make it another of the ten that I would listen to. And of course, it is entirely appropriate to watch it during this time of the year :D

Nerdyy Starts Listening to Hindi Film Music :O

A Long Time Ago

In A Country Far Far Away ...

Nerdyy's dad decides to gift Nerdyy, then a precocious kid, with a radio. For a kid in India in the 70s, a transistor radio was a pretty fabulous thing to possess. The objective according to my dad was to listen to a general knowledge quiz show called Bournvita Quiz Contest, and enhance my intellectual capacity :D. Well - as all my friends who know me can attest, telling me to do something usually results in me doing something very different. Away from my parents eyes and ears, I turned the radio dial to Vividh Bharati which was a hindi music channel that was sponsored by advertisers. The first few songs that I heard didnt really do anything and  I was about to give up on Hindi film music. Until one day I came across this song playing - and I never left :D

Starting a blog about music, food, all things economics, politics and gardening, I couldn't start with any other post than about one of my favorite songs of all time.
