Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas - Blackmail (1973)

This little digression from Mohd Rafi songs - fulfilling a farmaish from ms invisible - have a safe trip :D

Yeh Dil Tum Bin Kahin - Izzat (1968)

So for todays posts I chose four very differently flavored songs composed by the four all time top composers of the pre 1992 era - I saved the last Mohd Rafi song for the composer with the longest and the most prolific association (369 songs) - Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Chand Mera Dil - Hum Kissise Kum Nahin (1977)

One of the greatest love songs of all time - and yes I had posted the longer version of this medley song with all its parts - but this one dedicated to Mohd Rafi is just this part :D

chand mera dil chandni ho tum chand se hai door chandni kahan
laut ke aana hai yehi tumko jaa rahe ho tum jao meri jaan :P

The title of this film is taken from the classic sher of Ghalib:

ke lagaye na lage aur bujhayen na bane :D

A great duet beautifully composed by S.D. Burman

Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein Tujhko Bithakar - Brahmachari (1968)

Posted by Nerdyy

July 31st 1980 marked the passing of Mohd. Rafi one of the greatest playback singers of all time. The theme of this week then is Mohd Rafi songs - we will be listening to some of his more popular songs :D

Also since there has been so much talk and laughter about my typo of a critical word in the line (from the song) "tu mile dil khile"  and making it seem very very pervy, I decided to dedicate the posts of today to the word "dil" :P

The first song is simply superbly tuned by Shankar Jaikishan - this song won the filmfare award for Rafi, right before the Aradhana craze took over about a year later and Rafi almost disappeared.

6 footnotes:

Kitne Bhi Tu Karle Sitam - Sanam Teri Kasam (1982)

Posted by Nerdyy

This one was tough(in the sense that this is anything but obscure) - yes the Kishore Kumar version was popular - but so was this one - maybe marginally less - but Asha sounds so so sweet in this song :D Kinda amazing that R.D won his first Filmfare Award for this movie - yeah yeah I ranted a while ago about the injustice of him having to wait this long.

So ends our month devoted to R D Burman songs - most of them of the obscure or less popular variety. After a brief rest (well catching up on work) I will be back in a couple of days with a new theme - I already know the theme but you my dear readers will have to wait patiently .... PATIENCE GRASSHOPPA :D

6 footnotes:

Hume Tumse Pyar Kitna - Kudrat (1981)

Posted by Nerdyy

The Hindustani classical version of this superhit song - you could not get a more perfect example of R. D. Burmans versatility - a softer romantic version and this more classical based version each with its own flavor, each unique and each a classic. Both Kishore Kumar and Parveen Sultana were nominated for the Filmfare Award (male playback and female playback) but Parveen Sultana won hers, while Kishore Kumar was beaten out by his son Amit Kumar for Love Story.

6 footnotes:

Mere Naina Saawan Bhadon - Mehbooba (1976)

Posted by Nerdyy

This is an incredibly difficult song to pull off - and Lata does a marvelous job of it - this is the more classically accomplished version :D - the most famous of all film songs based on Raag Shivranjani (and there are many)

0 footnotes:

Tum Bin Jaoon Kahan - Pyar Ka Mausam (1968)

Posted by Nerdyy

If you folks have been keeping count, exactly one month ago I started the R. D. Burman month (probably inspired by the Shreya Ghoshal month on BE) - as a grand finale today we wrap up the "tandem songs" theme. All of these songs were super super popular - nothing obscure about them. I have chosen to present here the lesser played version among these superhit tandem songs. As you will realize the more popular versions of these songs have one common factor :D - and I'll let all of you figure it out.

Jidhar Dekhoon - Mahaan (1983)

Posted by Nerdyy

Well this movie had three Amitabhs (father and two sons) - this song is the more romantic among the two - neither of these two versions were really popular (Mahaan had a couple of superhit songs that will show up here at some point :P) - but I like this version better. Three Gurujis in one song - who can beat that :D

Also while browsing through miss lmks music blog i came across a similar feeling in one of the songs

bina dekhein bina jaanein tan man bandhe jo
bandhan jo janam janam ke marke ke judaa na ho :D

(although the situation in the song is talking about kids that are still in the womb, whenever I listen to the song my mind wanders into different connotations and situations)

5 footnotes:

Jeene De Yeh Duniya - Lava (1985)

Posted by Nerdyy

The lesser known among the two songs (the other one sung by Asha and Manmohan Singh was a happier more romantic version and was very very popular) - this is the sad version sung beautifully by Asha and has the better lyrics among the two versions :D

This is another of the songs that keeps me company whenever I feel very blue :D

kagaz mein kuch ho likha to mita doon
sauda kiya ho to keemat chuka doon
dekha jo sapna to sapna bhula doon
kaise bhula doon tumhe yaad aanewale

gajra khula the kajra baha tha
kal raat mujhko tu yaad aa raha tha

So the new theme is "tandem songs" - songs that have been sun separately by different singers - and since I am still on the broader theme of "kinda obscure" R D Burman songs, I will only post the less popular and less known version of the tandem songs.

The first song is simply superb - even though the other version was very very popular (and Kishore Kumar won a Filmfare award for it) - this lesser known version is a lot more appealing to me :)

I'm not sure which Raag this is based on - but what a beautiful composition - ustaadji teaching songs :P

The song was earlier sung by R. D Burman in bengali - beautiful song - for anyone that ever thought that he was deficient in Hindustani music - this song should put a rest to that thought

bolo ki aache go tomari aankhitey (tell me what is in your eyes)
ami parina mon bandhiya rakhitey (i cannot keep my heart tied down)

This (Bengali) song was also sung brilliantly by Shreya Ghoshal

Based on Raag Khamaj, this song was the obscure Amar Prem song that got lost among its significantly more popular popular brethren :D Amar Prem in my mind was one of the best R D Burman compositions of all time - and one of the best Bollywood albums of all time - how he never even got nominated for the Filmfare Awards will always flummox me :D (FYI the nominees were Pakeezah - Ghulam Mohammed, Shor - Laxmikant Pyarelal and Be-Imaan - Shankar Jaikishan (wtf) - with the winner being Shankar Jaikishan - of course why am I surprised. Also the year after this, they increased the nominations to 5)

Piyaa Baanwri - Khubsoorat (1980)

Posted by Nerdyy

R. D. Burman was famous for his western influenced music and orchestration, but he has a rather impressive collection of Hindustani Classical based songs. This song beautifully sung by Asha is from the movie Khubsoorat and is based on Raag Bihagda (apparently a combination of bihag and khamaj) - but Miss LMK can enlighten us more on this :P

Tomatoes - Part Two

Posted by Nerdyy

A different varietal from the one I had posted before, these are called Celebrity and they are a deterministic hybrid i.e. deterministic in the size of the plant. The last time I had grown these the fruits turned out to be one-fifth this size - so yeah I'm quite happy about this season so far. It was cool and wet during the first part of the growing season followed by hot and wet - with the excessively hot days just restricted to one week (this past week) - all in all great weather so far. The one on the left weighs about a pound and the other one about half a pound :D

So what do you do when you have a bunch of tomatoes fresh off you own vines :O Eat them of course - here is a classic recipe.

Panzanella:

About 2-3 pounds of fresh ripe tomatoes
Half a loaf of stale (day or two old) bread
One red onion sliced
Basil leaves julienned
Extra Virgin Olive oil and Red Wine Vinegar
Sea Salt and Tellicherry Pepper

Dice the tomatoes into large chunks as well as the bread. Mix all the ingredients together (except oil and vinegar). Toss in oil and vinegar, add salt and pepper to taste. Very simple but extremely delicious.

Yeh Dil Yeh Pagal Dil Mera - Maati Maange Khoon (1984)

This song was my constant companion during the period of 1993 till about oh 2001 .... but memories sometimes keep flooding back ... the words always seem so very real :D

This version of the song is composed by R. D. Burman and sung by Kishore Kumar. There is another version composed and sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - the two versions are completely different in structure as well as the mood - this one os more soulful and sad - that one is more trancy and joyous - either way they are both excellent - what a beautiful ghazal written by Javed Akhtar.

ik din mili ik mahjabeen tan bhi haseen jaan bhi haseen
dil ne kaha humse wahi khwabon ki manzil hai yehi
phir yunh huwa woh kho gayi to mujhko zid si ho gayee
layenge usko dhoondkar main aur meri awaargi

yeh dil hi tha jo seh gaya jo baat aisi keh gaya
kehne ko fir kya reh gaya ashkon ka dariya beh gaya
jab kehke woh dilbar gaya tere liye main mar gaya
rote hai usko raat bhar main aur meri awaargi

hum bhi kabhi abaad the aise kahan barbaad the
befikr the azaad the masroor the dishaad the

After the end of the work stuff in Paris, it was time to head for a little R & R and some wine tasting too - France has an excellent railway network with the high speed TGV trains making connectivity between relatively far away places very efficient. The distance between Paris and Aix-en-Provence is about 640 kms or about 400 miles. The TGV train covers the distance in approximately 3 hours with top speeds of about 200 mph - nice eh :D

Aix is the city of fountains

Rotunda Fountain
French Countryside and Vineyards
One of the Wineries
There was also a visit to the Mediterranean town of Cassis also a wine producing area.

Cassis
This was my second visit to the Mediterranean in 6 months - the dark blue sea is truly spectacular

Pure heaven
Aix and the rest of Provence is also famous for its produce and food markets - the produce is really stunning, as are the saucissons (dried sausages) cheeses olives and of course the Poulet Roti. Dont drool at these pictures too much :P

Farm Fresh Eggs with Bread in the background
Spices
Saucisson

The best way to enjoy the food is to go in the morning and bring a bunch of stuff back home - since I was staying in a place with a fridge and microwave I brought all this stuff home along with some excellent rotisserie chicken and potatoes - heaven :D

After three days in Provence it was back to Paris for a day and then back home :D

Paris Part Deux

Posted by Nerdyy

Damn - I have been so busy its been almost impossible to put together a few sentences to even make sense as a travel write up. Well guide or no guide - here are some more pictures.

Seine
Nothing captures the romance of Paris as the bridges across the Seine - truly a captivating site - there are a couple of bridges where people (usually couples) attach a lock on the side of the bridge along with their names - for posterity. There are two ways to see the beauty of the Seine - both equally enticing - one just walk and two take one of the bateaux (boat) tours.

Boat Tour
However I had very little time to do all this - as noted before I took a hop on and off tour where I connected with 4 different tours at different drop off and hop on points.

Place de la Concorde from across the river
One of the great sites in Paris - this is the former Place Louis XV later changed to Place de la Revolution - yes all the history and beheadings happened here. In the background (way back) you see the Eglise de la Madeline - Place Madeline also has a bunch of great stores - among them Laduree (famous for macarons - I had posted a pic from my Dec visit a while ago), Fauchon and Hediard (two great food stores) and Marquise De Sevigne (great chocolates).

After the Concorde, the bus takes a right turn to one of the most famous streets in the world - Champs Elysees.

Champs Elysees from the bus
Far away you see the Arc De Triomphe. Here is a closer look.

Arc De Triomphe
Next stop Eiffel Tower.

Eiffel Tower
It was a partially cloudy day so some of my pics were with the blue skies in the background and some had cloudy backgrounds - but it was a cooler day and I loved it.

Shrimp Linguini

Posted by Nerdyy

OK - maybe all of you forgot this

(Published in Golden Memories 10/15/2012)

 Marinara

Ingredients:

About 15 tomatoes from farmer nerdyys garden ( a mixture of cherokee purple, yellow pear, roma and early girl), diced
Two small onions diced
4 cloves of garlic crushed
Few basil leaves and marjoram from the garden

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a heavy bottomed pan (heavy bottomed for equal distribution of heat). Add onions cook till translucent, add garlic cook till it gives aroma or fried garlic, add all the tomatoes and stir over high heat. Keep stirring till most of the liquid becomes thick, then put it on simmer for abt 30 minutes. At the end stir in the julienned basil and marjoram leaves.

At some later point of time this will become a meat sauce :)

This was stored in the freezer since last Fall, so last weekend I took it out and decided to make a Shrimp Linguini using the marinara sauce.

First the shrimp - lightly tossed in crushed garlic and extra virgin olive oil and grilled:

Shrimp on the Barbie (as the Aussies would say)
Cook the pasta (Linguini) - takes about 10 mins in boiling water. Add a little salt to the boiling water (and a little extra virgin olive oil if you want). Take the pasta out and drain. Heat a little olive oil and add some crushed red peppers (dried) and some garlic from the marinade on the shrimp. Heat the marinara sauce and pour over linguini, add shrimp and toss together. Garnish with some chopped basil or parsley - both available in my garden :P

Linguini with Shrimp
The end product was a little smoky because of the grilled shrimp and the crushed red peppers. You can substitute the shrimp with zucchini and/or mushrooms.

Sheekh Kebab

200th post *clap clap clap*

Of course long weekend for the 4th of July means a lot of grilling - here is one of them.

Sheekh Kebab

1. One pound of ground beef (you can use ground lamb/chicken/turkey or even tofu -with tofu u would need binders e.g egg/flour something)
2. Two large onions
3. One whole garlic
4. Two square inch of ginger
5. About 5-10 thai peppers
6. Two tsp cumin powder
7. Three tsp coriander powder
8. Two tsp aamchoor powder
9. Two tsp ground chillies
10. Salt

Lightly blend onions garlic and ginger in a blender/food processor. Drain it of excess water (critically important step) and then incorporate into ground meat, along with spices and salt. Chop thai peppers and mix it with the meat and spice mix. Let it sit for a couple of hours. Wrap the meat around the skewers, fire up grill and cook it on the grill. Be sure to let it cook on one side before trying to turn over on the grill, otherwise it will stick to the grill. Enjoy with naan (I used frozen naans cooked on the grill)

Kebabs on da grill

Yumm !
One of my Kebabs crumbled - my fault I used 97% lean meat - next time I'll use a fattier ground meat for a better binding.

Enjoy the Kebabs with some chilled beer :D

Here is an early summer update on the progress of my plants - for this edition I'm limiting the updates to the plants on my deck - there are a bunch of plants downstairs that I'll update later.

Cherokee Tomato
This is a heirloom tomato that I'm growing on my balcony/deck ... typically its grown in the ground since it is indeterminate in height (usually about 7 feet tall at its peak) - there are a couple of large green tomatoes somewhere under all that foliage.

Celebrity
This is a determinate hybrid - you can see a few large tomatoes still green though.

Strawberry Plants
Not that exciting since I ate all the ripe ones - there are some new fruits that are still green though - its everbearing plants so it'll keep fruiting till September.

Herbs
Parsley Sage Thyme and Tarragon :D

My favorite song about my adopted homeland, this was performed at the Inauguration Festivities for Barack Obama in January 2009 before his first term began. I cannot think of a more appropriate song, a more appropriate occasion for the song, and a more appropriate setting (in front of the Lincoln Memorial, with the statue of Abraham Lincoln looking on) to live out the the first few words of the Constitution of the United States "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union" .... the quest for that more perfect union continues :D

Also appropriate for the occasion, you see royalty and commoners mingling together in the vast sea of humanity - yes that is George Lucas(among others) along with hundreds of thousands of other people singing along :D
