Lost in Late Summer Thunderstorm Clouds

Posted by Nerdyy

After a very hot and humid week, nature finally decided to give itself a break by creating a thunderous and lightning filled late afternoon. The setting was perfect for a late summer storm, and these two pictures capture the beauty of the storm. And of course, I was out and about running errands so I couldnt help but click these.

Apocalypse Now
Where the Clouds End and Sunshine Begins
Have a wonderful labor day long weekend (In the US and Canada) and a wonderful weekend for the rest. I will see you all on Tuesday :D

Keema Fry

Posted by Nerdyy

Rustic style keema with cubed onions garlic ginger and mostly whole spices except for aamchoor. Some of my mirchi found its way in here :D. This was made outdoors on the side burner of the grill.

For those non beef eaters (i.e. most of you) this can be made with lamb, chicken, turkey, soy or any other veg protein of choice.

Enjoy with naan and a beer :D

Neele Neele Ambar Par - Kalaakar (1984)

Posted by Nerdyy

A fabulous song based on a Tamil song composed by Illayaraja, this is infinitely more soulful than the original - a long long time ago I used to have a quite close non Indian friend - and this was the ONLY Indian song she liked :P, initially of course for the music and the singing but the word were also meaningful - hence the memories :D

2 footnotes:

Janoo Meri Jaan - Shaan (1980)

Posted by Nerdyy

The fun caper movie that went on for a little bit too long ... maybe about 45 minutes less would have made it a great fun movie. Nevertheless growing up I absolutely LOVED the music of the movie and used to listen to it all the time - and I mean ALL the time :D. Among all the songs in the movie this was my favorite - i.e. MINE :D

Bande Mataram

Posted by Nerdyy

Happy birthday Bharat Mata :D

Written in 1882 by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee as part of his magnum opus Anandamath, this poem later tuned was used as an inspirational clarion call by almost all freedom fighters in India. It was made India's national song in 1950, separate from the national anthem Jana Gana Mana. There is also some controversy about the song being overtly tilted towards Hindusim, which is not surprising since it is a Bengali composition that is dedicated to the homeland as a female diety and Durga (hence the Ma).

shujolang shufolang malayojoshitolang
shoshyoshyamolang mataram
shubro jyotsna pulokito jaminim
phullo kushumito dhrumodoloshobhinim
suhashining shumodhurobhashining
shukodang bordang mataram

Ei To Jibon - Ogo Bodhu Shundori (1980)

Posted by Nerdyy

Variety Variety Variety :D ... a few days back I was looking through BE and I was struck by the use of the word "MINE" to describe a certain song(s), so of course I started thinking about songs that I would strongly claim as being "MINE" - after all what are friends for if they dont inspire us :D. There is no chronological order to this theme - I'm just letting them develop as they come to my mind.
This one reminds me of an old long ago "friend" - we used to often sing this song together - and sometimes said friends dad would also join us :D

ei to jeebon jak na jedike jete chaye pran (this is life let it go wherever life wants to go)
beyara chalao phoarah gin sherry champagne rrrumm (bearer let the fountains flow gin etc)
khao khao boond hoye doobe jao (drink up and become a drop and drown)
dekho chokhe chokhe shorsheyful koruk matha jhimjhim (see mustard seeds (aka stars) in ur eyes and feel dizzy in the head)
lola lulu keno tomar boyesh hoina sholo amar nineteen (lola lulu why isnt ur age 16 and mine 19)

fun song .. fun times *sigh*

Tumi Koto Je Doore - Asha Bhonsle and R. D. Burman

Posted by Nerdyy

I did say variety :P

This Bengali song has a mesmerizing quality to it - beautifully sung by R.D. and Asha - and yes you can recognize undertones of Saagar in it, and that is because .....

The tune was used as a background theme to Dimple taking a splash in the ocean and Rishi Kapoor peeping at her :P. Definitely one of the most beautiful love stories ever filmed, Saagar tells the story of two childhood best friends(Dimple and Kamal Hassan)  who grow up together in a seaside village, sharing every little thing in life. One day a fishing magnate comes to this little village with her entourage, that includes her son(Rishi Kapoor), who hangs out at the beach until one morning he runs into Dimple - as you can see from this clip their eyes meet, and everything clicks instantly. Saagar was my first lesson from bollywood that love is so much more than friendship :D

This background theme was also used as a song in the movie Aaja Meri Jaan (that was mysteriously absent from the movie, but remains as a song)

3 footnotes:

Tu Mujhe Kubool - Khuda Gawah (1992)

Posted by Nerdyy

Another of Sridevis amazing double roles - this one is also mom and daughter - it is one thing to overshadow Anil Kapoor (in Lamhe) but in this movie Sridevi dazzles like only she can and totally overshadows a tired and old looking Amitabh - this song is also a tandem song - later in the movie (daughter) Sridevi sings a very accusatory song at (father) Amitabh :D

2 footnotes:

Ishq Bina - Taal (1999)

Posted by Nerdyy

The tandem song to the one posted on Glam ... this one is softer and more romantic :D

2 footnotes:

Tum Aa Gaye Ho - Aandhi (1975)

Posted by Nerdyy

The third of the three great Aandhi songs - sung by Lata and Kishore - beautiful song.

tum aa gaye ho noor aa gaya

jeene ke tumse wajah mil gayee
barey bewajah zindagi jaa rahee thee

1 footnotes:

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel (1970)

Posted by Nerdyy

It's Friendship Day apparently - and no song signifies (for me) friendship more than this one. The biggest hit single of 1970, this song also won the Grammy for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and the album also won the Album of the Year. This song also brings back some sweet and great memories :D

Happy Friendship Day to all ya folks :D

Kahin Na Ja Aaj Kahin Mat Jaa - Bade Dilwala (1983)

Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (1975)

Posted by Nerdyy

I said variety didnt I :D - my favorite band of all time and my favorite song from the band - David Gilmous is just awesome :D

how i wish how i wish you were here
we're just two lost souls
swimming in a fish bowl
year after year
running over the same old ground
what have we found ?
the same old fears
wish you were here :)

Kabhi Main Kahoon - Lamhe (1991)

Posted by Nerdyy

A great love song from one of the great (and un Bollywood) love stories in Hindi movie history - Anil Kapoor has a massive crush on an older Sridevi, who predictably doesnt reciprocate and goes her own way. Years later, Anil Kapoor comes across a much younger and exact look alike of Sridevi - her daughter, who develops a massive crush on Anil Kapoor :D. Sridevi looks oh so beautiful although she looked better in Chandni.

dard e dil dard e jigar hum sehte rahe
ek doosre se yehi kehte rahe
kabhi main kahoon kabhi tum kaho
ke maine tumhe yeh dil de diya
kabhi main sunoo kabhi tum suno
ke maine tumhe yeh dil de diya
