The Star-Spangled Banner performed by Whitney Houston Super Bowl 1991

Happy Birthday America - with arguable the best ever rendition of the National Anthem

Written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key commemorating the American Victory over the British in the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.

O say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

.... Yes the flag is there flying high over da blog :D

USA vs Belgium - Tuesday July 1st

Posted by Nerdyy

The World Cup Soccer is in full swing - so far Brazil and Argentina have looked underwhelming while Holland and France have looked pretty strong despite both of them kind of wilting in the heat a little bit. The last two World Cup champions Spain and Italy have been sent packing, while England probably turned in their worst group stage performance ever.

Tomorrow Argentina plays Switzerland while the US take on Belgium for the last two QF spots. Here to celebrate USA versus Belgium is a beer face off.

Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale from Kansas City Missouri
That would be my favorite American Craft Beer.
Delirium Tremens from Melle Belgium
One of my favorite Belgian beers (and I have many)

Dedicated to the 16th President of the United States and the preserver of the Union, the stunning memorial is situated at the Western Edge of the National Mall.

Lincoln Memorial
Inside the memorial, Mr Lincoln sits casting a wary eye at the work of the legislators at the other end of the National Mall and is flanked by two of his greatest speeches

Abe
No Memorial dedicated to Lincoln would be complete without this - arguably the greatest American speech at its darkest hour. The Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863)fought around the town of Gettysburg, PA is often called the turning point of the Civil War and resulted in a Union victory in the battle under Major General George Meade as well as the retreat of the Confederate Army under General Robert E Lee. This speech was given on November 19, 1883 at the Gettysburg Battlefield to commemorate the dead from that pivotal conflict.

Stanley Cup - Conference Championships

Posted by Nerdyy

Yes it is that time of the year again - my second favorite sport(after Football - American football that is) is having its playoffs for the Stanley Cup. For my Canadian(and US) readers you know exactly what I am talking about :D - for my European or Asian readers we are talking about the NHL (National Hockey League) playoffs.

This year we have 3 of the 4 conference championship teams belonging to the Original Six. The Western Conference Finals is a repeat of last years matchup with the defending Stanley Cup Champions - my beloved Chicago Blackhawks squaring off against the Los Angeles Kings (Currently the Blackhawks are up 1-0 in their best of 7 series - Yes Toews Kane Sharp Hossa are all there:D). In the Eastern Conference Championship Series we have a matchup of two storied original six franchises - the New York Rangers (who last won the cup in 1984 - remember Mark Messier :D) and the most storied franchise in the NHL the Montreal Canadiens (who last won the cup in 1993 - remember Jacques Lemaire, Guy (pronounced Geee) LeFleur and Patrick Roy (pronounced Waah)) - with the Rangers currently up 1-0 in their best of 7 series.

Stay Tuned :D

Best Movies of the Year - Gravity

Posted by Nerdyy

In my opinion, the best movie of the year - this spellbinding edge of the seat thriller (and I mean edge of the seat - when I went to see it I could only sit back for the first three minutes or so !!) tells the story of a group of space station astronauts who get caught up in a debris shower that leads to a completely damaged space ship in the middle of nowhere. A truly remarkable effort in film - this movie is the co-favorite to win the Best Picture award and is a near certainty to win the Best Director award. A must see if ever there was one coming out of 2013.

Best Movies of the Year - Dallas Buyers Club

Posted by Nerdyy

Another great movie about the true story about a 1980s Texas blue collar worker who suddenly finds out that he is HIV positive - in the early days of the disease this was know as a "gay" disease and hence wasnt afforded the attention it deserved because of its unfortunate association of what was thought to be an alternative lifestyle. Well - the protagonist here Matthew McConaughey is 100% straight and this movie tells the story of society slowly coming to grips with the large scale severity of the disease and more importantly the struggles of a group of HIV positive men (and women) to stay alive - and the truly superhuman efforts of the two main protagonists to smuggle and provide non FDA approved proteins vitamins and other supplements to delay the inevitability of death - the operation they run is the Dallas Buyers Club. Remarkable performances by McConaughey and Jared Leto make them prohibitive favorites to win Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

Best Movies of the Year - American Hustle

Posted by Nerdyy

A great and somewhat lighthearted look at the Abscam bribery scandal that engulfed several high ranking US politicians in the late 70s. The movie is notable for its interaction among the lead actors but eventually stands apart because of a truly gorgeous Amy Adams who is in virtually every scene (oh those eyes !) - with a very unique wardrobe to boot ( you will have to watch the movie to know what I am talking about :P). Jennifer Lawrence turns in a pretty good performance and is a favorite to win the best supporting actress Oscar (Although Lupita Nyongo from 12 Years a Slave is also a favorite) - but ultimately the movie belongs to Amy Adams - although she will not win the Oscar because of a truly remarkable performance from Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine.
