After Wanderers post on GM, I thought this to be the perfect song to post - this song talks about the loss of the adda at the coffee house. The Coffee House being referred to here is a Calcutta tradition near the University area, populated by students hanging out and having coffee. Adda refers to hanging out with a bunch of friends and yapping .. i.e. dem Omega dayz :P. The song wistfully looks back at all the fun that was shared by a group of friends and how everyone scattered away - some dead, some far away, others "lapata". For me, it refers to not only the omega days but also the masala days of old when I used to actually have fun on masala and not be bored to death by spammers and idiotic abusers :P, moreover from a more real life perspective it brings back many many memories of hanging out with friends in my various College and University careers :D

From the same movie as the previous song, this is a gorgeous romantic song ... translated it means .. my dream came true today, the person who was far away came close today and filled my life with color - in the movie Rakhee was blind, so the idea of filling her life with color was sweet and profound :D. Also unlike the previous song, this song had a quite popular hindi counterpart in the Barsaat Ki Ek Raat version of this movie - Apne Pyar ke Sapne Sach huwe - so yes same meaning :D

To celebrate Guru's birthday (belatedly since it was on the 11th) - what better song to bring together Guru and Durga Puja than this composition form the Bengali movie Anusandhan. This song was a big big hit, and the movie was one of the biggest box office blockbusters of all time (the Bengali version, there was a Hindi version too). This song also brings together my three gurus :D

Happy Bijaya Dashami - Durga bids us all farewell and promised to be back next year :D. This song was always my favorite Rabindrasangeet - apparently my mom used to sing this to me when I was a baby - so that might have something to do with that. This song is of a strong philosophical bend, with thoughts of death and departure. All in all a great song :D

Happy Maha Ashtami everyone - the peak of the four day pujas (is also a vegetarian day :O) - the basic story of durga puja is that there is this demon or asura terrorizing the earth ( and comes in the form of a buffalo - hence mahishasura) - so the three main gods decide to create a woman warrior using parts of their body to demolish the demon - the woman rides a lion :P. One of the critical battles happen on the evening of ashtami and beginning of navami - when two henchmen of the demon attack durga from behind - legend has it that durga turns around, demolishes them after glaring at them for disturbing her main fight LOLL :D. To commemorate this victory, there is a specail puja called Shandhi Puja that is performed at the time that ashtami switches to navami (usually late evening on ashtami day) - the area around the durga murti is lit with many lamps for shandhi puja.

Here is the second song again with strong devotional undertones. (This song is from the movie Dadar Kirti - Deeds of my older brother)

It's the start of the four day Durga Puja Festivities - today is Shaptami. For the next four days I will have four Rabindrasangeets - written and composed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Growing up I used to more or less hate Rabindrasangeets primarily because my parents forced me to listen to them :D - but these four are always my favorites. The interesting thing about some of these songs is that it canbe equally applied as a devotional song as well as a romantic song. It is also ironic that I am devoting songs to a religious festival LOLL ... many years ago a very close and religiously inclined friend had impressed on me the need (for me)to keep in touch with my spirituality regardless of whether I wanted to visit the mandir or not. She had stressed that I needed to remember the cultural background that I came from (no she didnt want to drag me to her favorite church or anything else :D). I might have laughed her thoughts off at that time, however over time I did understand what she was getting at - so here I am spending time and space on my blog celebrating the most important religious festival for us Bengalis :D

I found this tranlation online - its pretty good (amazing lyrics and song - the singer is Hemant Kumar or Hemanta Mukherjee)

Manna Dey at his fabulous best - you can also compare this song to Mere Mehboob Tujhe - both based on Raag Jhinjhoti - the mukhdas of both songs are very similar.

This song, based on the earlier song is also very famous - one of Runa Laila's best songs. The lyrics are basically saying my friend I went to your house for three days and never saw you :D
