Best Movies of the Year - Gravity

Posted by Nerdyy

In my opinion, the best movie of the year - this spellbinding edge of the seat thriller (and I mean edge of the seat - when I went to see it I could only sit back for the first three minutes or so !!) tells the story of a group of space station astronauts who get caught up in a debris shower that leads to a completely damaged space ship in the middle of nowhere. A truly remarkable effort in film - this movie is the co-favorite to win the Best Picture award and is a near certainty to win the Best Director award. A must see if ever there was one coming out of 2013.

Best Movies of the Year - Dallas Buyers Club

Another great movie about the true story about a 1980s Texas blue collar worker who suddenly finds out that he is HIV positive - in the early days of the disease this was know as a "gay" disease and hence wasnt afforded the attention it deserved because of its unfortunate association of what was thought to be an alternative lifestyle. Well - the protagonist here Matthew McConaughey is 100% straight and this movie tells the story of society slowly coming to grips with the large scale severity of the disease and more importantly the struggles of a group of HIV positive men (and women) to stay alive - and the truly superhuman efforts of the two main protagonists to smuggle and provide non FDA approved proteins vitamins and other supplements to delay the inevitability of death - the operation they run is the Dallas Buyers Club. Remarkable performances by McConaughey and Jared Leto make them prohibitive favorites to win Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

Best Movies of the Year - American Hustle

A great and somewhat lighthearted look at the Abscam bribery scandal that engulfed several high ranking US politicians in the late 70s. The movie is notable for its interaction among the lead actors but eventually stands apart because of a truly gorgeous Amy Adams who is in virtually every scene (oh those eyes !) - with a very unique wardrobe to boot ( you will have to watch the movie to know what I am talking about :P). Jennifer Lawrence turns in a pretty good performance and is a favorite to win the best supporting actress Oscar (Although Lupita Nyongo from 12 Years a Slave is also a favorite) - but ultimately the movie belongs to Amy Adams - although she will not win the Oscar because of a truly remarkable performance from Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine.

Best Movies of the Year - Her

An incredibly quirky and futuristic movie about a withdrawn guy experiencing problems with this fiancee and getting slowly drawn to(and eventually falling in love with) his sexy voiced operating system LOLLL .... yes the parallels between this story and some of our e-experiences are very interesting and entertaining - particularly where the OS (Scarlett Johanssen) tells the guy (Joaquim Phoenix) that yes she flirts with many many other guys too but that she loves him very much also :D

Best Movies of the Year - 12 Years a Slave

Aha ! Its time for the Oscars (Sunday March 2) so it must be also time for my take on the best movies of the year 2013 :D - This year I dont explicitly rank them because I have yet to see the movie 12 Years A Slave - it has just been that kind of year - especially post June where I have had little if any time to do anything other than focus on work :D

This movie 12 Years a Slave is a co-favorite to win the Best Picture of the Year award ( I still have hopes of seeing it today evening - but we will see ), and could also win some acting awards - most notable best supporting actress.
