A great devotional song - this song was somewhat of a hit in 1980 so it isnt entirely obscure but I'm sure people have forgotten it. I used to love this song in those days although I barely understood the words.
This song got lost among the two superhit songs from this movie - Hume Tumse Pyar Kitna and Tuney O Rangeela. Nevertheless this is a great song and a great example of R.D Burmans use of Western instruments as well as musical styling - although Hema seems to be dancing a more traditional Indian dance :D
chhoro sanam kahe ka gham
hanste raho khilte raho
mit jayega saara gila
humse gale milte raho :D
As many of you cross listeners of the two music blogs - this one and butterfly effect - know, there is an ongoing Shreya Ghoshal thread that has been unfolding over this month - today is the last day of the month - and I'm taking a one song break from R.D to post this gorgeous song sung by Shreya - dedicated to the blog Butterfly Effect where I had honed my blogging skills :D
This song was written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1905, and is mainly meant as a patriotic song exhorting people to follow their own paths (and throw off the British rule) - but it is also an all time classic inspirational song. This song was also partially adapted for the movie Kahani.
Jodi tor dak shune keu na ashey tobe ekla cholo re
(If they answer not to thy call walk alone)
Jodi keu kotha na koy jodi shobai thake mukh firaye shobai korey bhoi
Tobe poran khule o tui mukh fute tui moner kotha ekla bolo re
(If they are afraid and cower mutely facing the wall, o thou unlucky one,
open thy mind and speak out alone)
Jodi shobai fire jaye ore ore o obhaga shobai fire jaye
Jodi gohon
pothe jabar kale keu fire na chaye
Tobe pother kanta o tui
rokto makha choron tole ekla dolo re
(If they turn away, and desert you when crossing the wilderness,
O thou unlucky one,
trample the thorns under thy tread,
and along the blood-lined track travel alone)
Jodi alo na dhore ore ore o obhaga alo na dhore
Jodi jhor badole
adhar Rate duar deye ghorey
Tobe Bojranole apon buker pajor jaliye
niye ekla jolo re
(If they do not hold up the light when the night is troubled with storm,
O thou unlucky one,
with the thunder flame of pain ignite thy own heart,
and let it burn alone.)
...the translation is by Rabindranath himself. In the background of the performance is the India Gate built in 1931 by the British to commemorate the Indian soldiers that died in World War I and the Afghan Wars fighting under the British flag. Much later, in 1971 the Indian Government built the Amar Jawan Jyoti (light of the immortal soldier) to burn continuously to commemorate the Indian soldiers that lost their lives during the India Pakistan war of 1971.
My three gurujis comes together in this great song - this was one of the best Amitabh movies of all time - almost no fights and none of the usual tamasha of the Amitabh movies of those times, but the movie kept your attention all through because of the story, the acting and the kickass dialogues from Amitabh. The movie is based on the Bengali movie Ami Shey o Shokha (you me and the boyfriend), and the primary foundation is the strong and unbreakable friendship between Amitabh and Rakhee (aka sakhi) - there are three great songs in the movie but this one is my favorite.
kisi baat par main kisisse khafa hoon
main zinda hoon par zindagi se khafa hoon :D
Today turned out to be one of those drop dead gorgeous days - late June partially cloudy day with lots of sunshine nevertheless, and the temperature barely reached 70F (21.1C) with a distinctly cool wind blowing. It was a day that you just had to spend outdoors and I did - tomorrow promises more of the same :D - If all of summer was like this it would be my favorite season :P
When I last left you I was about to post the 4th song with a tune that is a combination of the other three - but also has its own flavor. Lata Mangeshkar again does a great job.
na mitti na gara na sona sajana
jahan pyar dekho wahi ghar banana
yeh dil ki imarat banti hai dilse
dilason ko chooke umeedon se milke
Since it was R. D. Burmans birthday a couple of days ago - I decided to devote some time and a lot of posts to some of his relatively obscure songs, songs that are not that well remembered but that are memorable nevertheless.
This one is a ghost song :O and based on a superhit Bengali song composed and sung by R. D himself called fire esho anuradha (come back anuradha) ... this tune and its variants would eventually feature 4 times (both bengali and hindi). First the hindi song
Gorgeous song ... amazing high notes by Lata but that is what she is known for.
The original Bengali song:
Now the song proved to be very very popular that years later in the early 80s R.D. Burman created a reply i.e. Anuradha coming back, sung by Asha and himself :D. I wouldnt watch this video unless you want to fall off your chair/couch laughing. The video was created some 20 years after the song , but I can't seem to find just the song on youtube. This song is titled Firey elam doorey giye (i am back after going far away) ... laugh away at the video, but the song is gorgeous :D
View of the rally in Grant Park with the city in the background and the Stanley Cup in the middle
and yes ... i forgot to do this yesterday - the Blackhawks organization took out a full page ad in the Boston Globe thanking the Bruins organization and the city of Boston - very very classy :D
Happy Birthday R. D. Burman. There has always been a special sparkle in every song sung by Asha Bhonsle for R.D. Burman and why not - they were soulmates :D So, to celebrate the birthday of one of my Gurujis, I chose this masterpiece of a composition. When she still did shows post RDs death, Asha used to always sing this song at the end and break down into tears - the lyrics are just that beautiful and powerful. Asha won the National Award for best playback singer and Gulzar won the National Award for best lyricist (note the non rhyming nature of the lyrics).
mera kuch samaan tumhare paas para hai
sawaan ke kuch bheege bheege din rakhe hai
aur mere ek khat mein lipti raat pari hai
woh raat bujha do mera woh samaan lauta do :)
ek akeli chhatri mein jab aadhe aadhe bheeg rahe the
aadhe sookhe aadhe geele sookha to main le aayi thi
geela man shayad bistar ke paas pada ho
woh bhijwado mera woh samaan lauta do :)
Instead of it being just a collection of pictures, I was thinking more in terms of a travel guide writeup along with pictures :D
You start at the beginning - after you arrive in Paris - the city has a great public transportation system, so it would be kind of foolish not to take advantage of that - well unless you like throwing money away or you are carrying a LOT of luggage. Be advised that escalators are rare on the Paris metro. The easiest and cheapest way to get to the city from CDG (Charles DeGaulle) airport is the RER B train which takes you directly to the city center - the cost is about 9 euros (as opposed to 60+ euros for a cab) - among the central (and tourist friendly) stops it makes is Chatelet-LesHalles (which is one of the largest metro stations anywhere), St Michel (right opposite Notre Dame) and Luxembourg Gardens (right next to the gardens). In most stations its an easy crossover from the RER to the Metro - of course you might run across a scene like this :D
This time around I had decided to stay at an extended stay type hotel - the benefit is that these hotels have a kitchen, fridge and microwave in the room, and a laundromat on the premises. Given the stunning variety of food available, it gives you the option of buying stuff and keeping them in the fridge. This beautiful fountain was outside the hotel
Fontaine des Innocents
Last time I went to the Louvre (and a very crowded Louvre) - this time because of time constraints I couldnt spend that much time sightseeing so I decided to visit the Pompidou Center which has a great museum.
View of Paris (and Notre Dame) from the Pompidou Center
Basilica of the Sacre Couer in the distance
The museum had a lot of very interesting art pieces - including these couple of Picassos
This one titled Printemps (Spring)
I also hopped on an open top double decker bus one day and roamed around the city - you can hop on and off as often as you like and change sightseeing routes. Here are a few pictures:
Paris Opera Building
Moulin Rouge
The tabac shop and cafe seen in the Shammi Kapoor song is gone :P
Gare Du Nord
The bus took me by this, and I had to take a picture - the Eurostar train to London departs from here as does the Thalys train to Brussels and Amsterdam :P
In a stunning last minute surge the Chicago Blackhawks score twice in 17 seconds in the last minute and 16 seconds to beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 in game 6, winning the Stanley Cup Finals Series 4-2.
CONGRATULATIONS CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS 2013 STANLEY CUP CHAMPS :D
Well - the Stanley Cup Finals are in full swing - this has certainly been one of the better finals that we have seen in a long long time - with three overtime games already. The Blackhawks are currently up 3-2 having demolished the Bruins 3-1 in last nights game :P, after winning last Wednesdays game in a thrilling overtime encounter(that was a great game BTW) - next game is Monday night and the Blackhawks win if they win tomorrow - otherwise it goes to a Game 7.
Multiple great songs combine to form this medley - but of course the piece de resistance of this group of songs is the first one - Chand Mera Dil ( I should probably post that seperately later) - also if you ever wondered, this is where WAKAOOOOO comes from :P
One of the big hit songs from this all hit album, this song is based on the popular Bengali song composed by R. D. Burman Bondho Dwarer Ondhokarey Thakbo Na ( I wont stay confined by the darkness of closed doors). Both versions are sung by Kishore Kumar - here Asha joins him.
Another beautiful and inspiring song - for all of us - we all have to navigate the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" - we all lose people close to us - we all have to deal with sorrow and pain ... for all of us there is a better tomorrow that will make us smile :D
R. D. Burmans swan song and what an album - it really puts his entire career in perspective :D (this song is sung by a Hemant Kumar clone )
dil na ummed to nahin naakaam hi to hai
lambi hai gham ki shaam magar shaam hi to hai
kabhi dhoond lega yeh karwan
woh nayi zameen naya aasman
jisse dhoondti hai teri nazar
na udaas ho mere humsafar :)
One of my favorite songs :) .. the movie didnt have the full song so heres the full song with just pictures :D
chand chhupa badal mein sharmake meri jaana
seene se lag jaa tu balkhake meri jaana
gumsum sa hai gupchup sa hai madhosh hai khamosh hai
yeh sama haan yeh samaa kuch aur hai :P
Just randomly browsing through you tube I came across this song - its been a while since I had heard it - but what a beautiful song - kinda fits everything :D (I remember the movie - it was a pretty well made movie from Mahesh Bhatt)
Yes yes I've been away and somehow I'm suffering from a pretty exhausting jet lag this time around :O although its getting better - I'm thinking after this weekend I should be fine :D
I know my friends are getting all impatient about posts - patience patience sabr ka fal meetha hota hai :P What better songs to get back in the groove than these two :P
I thought I would post one picture - the iconic Paris image :D ..this is from the top of a double decker tour bus - from right across the river in the Trocadero district :D
Rest of the pics next week ...happy weekend everyone :D
Yes yes - I'm out of town in damp and cold Paris right now - but I love the cooler weather - it was very very hot the last few days :D .... and yes as the old saying goes "You can take the boy outta the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto outta the boy" i.e. I'm very much keeping up with my beloved Blackhawks. So - the conference championships are over - what was interesting in this years conference finals is that the four representatives (two each in the Eastern and Western conferences) were the last four winners of the Stanley Cup - interesting eh?
Nevertheless in the Eastern Conference Final, the Boston Bruins thrashed the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 4 game sweep of the best of seven series. In the Western Conference Final, after a hard fought double overtime win yesterday, the Blackhawks beat the defending champs the LA Kings 4-1 in their best of seven series.
The Stanley Cup starts Wednesday night - GOOOOOO BLACKHAWKSSSSSSSSSSSS
Don't know when my next post will be - maybe some pictures. Songs will resume posting after I get back on the 18th :D - Have fun everyone :P
The movie proved to be kinda boring but the soundtrack is totally to die for - A R Rahman is just brilliant. And this song really makes you want to climb to the roof of a train and dance ... of course as a guy it would help if Malaika was there too ;)
What a song - what lyrics what music and the singers Sukhvinder and Sapna Awasthi - speechless :D
Shahrukhs first anti hero movie - the movie that made him a star. This movie was also a major comeback movie for Anu Malik. And of course this is the first time we get to see the Kajol-Shahrukh jodi.
Tonights series of posts is about Shahrukh Khan - no I'm not a fan at all - but all of these songs are great. So close your eyes and listen to the songs - although I wouldnt - just because of the heroines :P - in this song Divya Bharati :D. This is Shahrukh Khan's debut movie and Divya Bharati's first big hit (Vishwatma was a flop and Dil ka Kya Kasoor was an average hit). This song is just amazing.
Another great Bollywood movie in the sense that it showed for the first time that being a villain was not restricted to the pervy Shakti Kapoor types or the menacing Mogambo types - I'm sure everyone is aware of the plot to this movie - yes the gorgeous numero uno heroine of the time Kajol is the villain :D
Good Saturday Morning my Music Friends :D - for those that saw me yesterday you must be aware that I was physically and mentally exhausted after a LONG week - so yes I took the time to take an almost 12 hour sleep break - hence the lack of posts last night - Shocking eh :D
Just to get my dear wonderful friends back on the jhooming track - here is a song from a movie that I just loved - one of the more mature movies to come out of Bollywood :D
