Yeh Dosti Hum Nehin - Sholay (1975)

Posted by Nerdyy

This enduring classic from Sholay was one of the biggest hits of 1975-1976, but also was noteworthy as one of the songs that was equally popular a few years down the road. This was the last big hit from Manna Dey, and his pairing with Kishore Kumar and having these two songs be the last two songs for October is also ironic because it seamlessly moves us to our theme for November :D

What a perfect way to end the month of October - with an ode to friendship - that amazing connection between two individuals that never fails to surprise you :D

Ek Chatur Naar - Padosan (1968)

Posted by Nerdyy

The movie Padosan had great music - we will meet the most popular song from that movie in November - but this song was a cult classic that has had amazing staying power in our memories - not many would expect Kishore Kumar to go toe to toe with Manna Dey in this classical based song - but he did an amazing job as did Manna Dey.

Ae Bhai Zara Dekhke Chalo - Mera Naam Joker (1970)

Posted by Nerdyy

One of the biggest hits of the year 1970 it was also one of the biggest hits of Manna Dey's career - the movie was excruciatingly long and had 2 intermissions :O - but there were three songs that were absolutely great - this was of course one of them - yo bro look where you are going :D

Jeevan Chalne Ka Naam - Shor (1972)

Posted by Nerdyy

For the last two days of October I am going to post a pair of songs each day - one of them will be a song that was a massive hit on the popularity charts and the other although not that popular is still a noteworthy song. The first song of today, although not the most popular song of the movie is still a favorite of mine. This talks about carrying on even if you encounter difficulties in life - a great song indeed :D

jeevan chalne ka naam chalte raho subho shaam
ke rasta kat jayega mittra ke baadal chhat jayega mittra
ke dukh se jhukna na mittra ke ik pal rukna na mittra :D

Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen - Waqt (1965)

Posted by Nerdyy

ae meri zohra jabeen tujhe maloom nehin
tu abhi tak hai haseen aur main jawaan
tujhpe kurbaan meri jaan meri jaan

The movie was also famous for the first major role in Raaj Kumar's (aka Jaani) career (although he was also in Mother India) - "chinoy seth jinke apne ghar sheeshay ke ho woh doosro par paththar nehin fenka karte" ... *seeti*

An all time classic - what a song !! dha dha kirta dha dha kirta :P

Tere Naina Talash Kare - Talash (1969)

Posted by Nerdyy

tere naina talash kare jise woh hai tujhi me kahin deewane :D

Based (apparently) on Raag Chhaya Nat (Miss IQ can confirm this :P), this is an awesome composition and always one of my favorite Manna Dey songs ... the antra has similarities to the antra of o meri sharmilee (both composed by S. D. Burman), but we will hear that song on these pages in November, so we can compare :D

Coffee Houser Shey Addata Aaj Aar Nei - Manna Dey

Posted by Nerdyy

After Wanderers post on GM, I thought this to be the perfect song to post - this song talks about the loss of the adda at the coffee house. The Coffee House being referred to here is a Calcutta tradition near the University area, populated by students hanging out and having coffee. Adda refers to hanging out with a bunch of friends and yapping .. i.e. dem Omega dayz :P. The song wistfully looks back at all the fun that was shared by a group of friends and how everyone scattered away - some dead, some far away, others "lapata". For me, it refers to not only the omega days but also the masala days of old when I used to actually have fun on masala and not be bored to death by spammers and idiotic abusers :P, moreover from a more real life perspective it brings back many many memories of hanging out with friends in my various College and University careers :D

Amar Shopno Je - Anusandhan (1981)

Posted by Nerdyy

From the same movie as the previous song, this is a gorgeous romantic song ... translated it means .. my dream came true today, the person who was far away came close today and filled my life with color - in the movie Rakhee was blind, so the idea of filling her life with color was sweet and profound :D. Also unlike the previous song, this song had a quite popular hindi counterpart in the Barsaat Ki Ek Raat version of this movie - Apne Pyar ke Sapne Sach huwe - so yes same meaning :D

Bolo Hori Bol Hori Bol - Anusandhan (1981)

Posted by Nerdyy

To celebrate Guru's birthday (belatedly since it was on the 11th) - what better song to bring together Guru and Durga Puja than this composition form the Bengali movie Anusandhan. This song was a big big hit, and the movie was one of the biggest box office blockbusters of all time (the Bengali version, there was a Hindi version too). This song also brings together my three gurus :D

Diner Sheshey Ghumer Deshey - Rabindrasangeet

Posted by Nerdyy

Happy Bijaya Dashami - Durga bids us all farewell and promised to be back next year :D. This song was always my favorite Rabindrasangeet - apparently my mom used to sing this to me when I was a baby - so that might have something to do with that. This song is of a strong philosophical bend, with thoughts of death and departure. All in all a great song :D

The veiled shadow of the day embraces the drawing night
Enthralling my heart
The illusory golden shore of the misty further bank
Sing the closing song.
Heads down, merriment over, those at the departing time
Do not turn around on their journey back.
Drawn by the ebb tide Ill join them leaving this abode -
As evening draws, day passes by.
Oh! come
To take me away
At the day's end, by the last boat.

By the evening tide from the further bank
By the dwindling light
Has a boat left for me?
With the setting sun, close to the shore by the shade of the dense wood
Like a shadow I see them row
Should I hail, would he reply?
Is there someone obliging so?
Oh! come
To take me away
At the day's end, by the last boat.

Those leaving for home, have long gone
Those left for the shore, have long reached
Neither at shore nor at home, the one in between
Who shall take him away when the dusk falls?
No flowers to offer, crops failed
He laughs at his fate
For him the daylight is over and the night doesn't shine
He's the one alone sitting by the bank.
Oh! come
To take me away
At the day's end, by the last boat.

Ei Korechho Bhalo - Rabindrasangeet

Happy Nabami everyone. Another great Rabindrasangeet from the same movie as the earlier one - Dadar Kirti.

You have done well cruel one, you have done well
Just like this ignite an intense fire in my heart

If my incense hadnt been burnt there would have been no fragrance
If my lamp hadnt been lit there would have been no light

When my soul is unconscious, your touch is both a hurt and my reward
In the darkness of illusion and shame I am unable to see you
Ignite with your lightning all that is dark in me.

Chorono Dhoritey Diyogo Amare - Rabindrasangeet

Posted by Nerdyy

Happy Maha Ashtami everyone - the peak of the four day pujas (is also a vegetarian day :O) - the basic story of durga puja is that there is this demon or asura terrorizing the earth ( and comes in the form of a buffalo - hence mahishasura) - so the three main gods decide to create a woman warrior using parts of their body to demolish the demon - the woman rides a lion :P. One of the critical battles happen on the evening of ashtami and beginning of navami - when two henchmen of the demon attack durga from behind - legend has it that durga turns around, demolishes them after glaring at them for disturbing her main fight LOLL :D. To commemorate this victory, there is a specail puja called Shandhi Puja that is performed at the time that ashtami switches to navami (usually late evening on ashtami day) - the area around the durga murti is lit with many lamps for shandhi puja.

Here is the second song again with strong devotional undertones. (This song is from the movie Dadar Kirti - Deeds of my older brother)

Do allow me to touch your feet
Do not, please do not, step away
With my life and in death
Through my joys and sorrows
Close to my heart, I will hold them

My burden of desires, I can tether no more
How long do I roam around with this load
Wreathe a garland with your own hands
Do not let me come apart

Ever athirst is desire
Save me by quelling it
May it win it's last triumph
By succumbing to you

The petty trifles of this self
Door to door I can sell no more
Do please, O please do make me yours
Garlanding me with your embrace

Aguner Poroshmoni - Rabindrasangeet

Posted by Nerdyy

It's the start of the four day Durga Puja Festivities - today is Shaptami. For the next four days I will have four Rabindrasangeets - written and composed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Growing up I used to more or less hate Rabindrasangeets primarily because my parents forced me to listen to them :D - but these four are always my favorites. The interesting thing about some of these songs is that it canbe equally applied as a devotional song as well as a romantic song. It is also ironic that I am devoting songs to a religious festival LOLL ... many years ago a very close and religiously inclined friend had impressed on me the need (for me)to keep in touch with my spirituality regardless of whether I wanted to visit the mandir or not. She had stressed that I needed to remember the cultural background that I came from (no she didnt want to drag me to her favorite church or anything else :D). I might have laughed her thoughts off at that time, however over time I did understand what she was getting at - so here I am spending time and space on my blog celebrating the most important religious festival for us Bengalis :D

I found this tranlation online - its pretty good (amazing lyrics and song - the singer is Hemant Kumar or Hemanta Mukherjee)

Touch my heart with your fire so that this life
burns as a glorious offering.

Let this body be like a lamp among the heavens
And every song light up in glowing gesture.

In the heart of darkness I shall feel your touch
Through the nights as you light the stars
One after another.

No darkness shall veil this vision -
I shall find wondrous lights
Wherever I gaze.
And my tears will find a blazing fervor
As they reach up for the skies.

Happy Pujas everyone :D

Hoyto Tomari Jonyo - Teen Bhuboner Paare (1969)

Posted by Nerdyy

One of my favorite Bengali songs of all time - the song speaks to the madness of falling in love = and its Manna Dey again :D

perhaps because of you I have been so crazy in love
I know you are unique thats why i extend my arms
if I have ever wanted to get to know you in solitude
I have scrambled around just to do that

I am already lost and I dont know your conditions
even if disaster happens I still want you

I am fast and with my two eyes I dream of storms across the horizon
you didnt object saying it was bad then why this doubt
lets leave everything and go.

(stuff gets lost in the translation)

Ami Je Jalsha Ghorey - Anthony Firingee (1967)

Manna Dey at his fabulous best - you can also compare this song to Mere Mehboob Tujhe - both based on Raag Jhinjhoti - the mukhdas of both songs are very similar.

I am like a chandelier in a dance hall, once the night is over no one remembers me :D

Bondhu Teen Din Tor Barite Gelam - Runa Laila

Posted by Nerdyy

This song, based on the earlier song is also very famous - one of Runa Laila's best songs. The lyrics are basically saying my friend I went to your house for three days and never saw you :D

Of course you should be able to recognize the Hindi song based on this (hint: chooha aage peeche billi :D)

7 footnotes:

Shohag Chand - Nirmalendu Chowdhury

The next few songs are great examples of Bengali folk songs both from West Bengal and East Bengal (now Bangladesh). This song is an old classic, and the next song is based on this song - both songs are very famous.

Aaj Noi Gunjon - Lata Mangeshkar

Posted by Nerdyy

What an absolutely beautiful composition by Salil Chaudhury and wonderfully sung by Lata. The song talks about not being selfish and wallowing/wasting time with selfish thoughts about love and heartbreak - rather to spend time bettering the world.

Tolo Chinnobeena - Ekanta Apan (1987)

Posted by Nerdyy

"only those who dare to fail greatly can ever acheive greatly" .. or so the famous quote from Bobby Kennedy goes ..... this song kinda expresses the same thoughts .... forget about you failures ... pick up the shattered veena ... restring it and start tuning the splendor of life with it :D

A beautifully written and composed (by R.D.Burman) song that is also excellently sung - this was a big hit when it came out.

2 footnotes:

Amar Shopno Tumi - Ananda Ashram (1977)

Posted by Nerdyy

Did you guys know that I reached 300 songs ... in about 5 and half months :O We started this journey in mid to late April :D

This song was one of the biggest hits of all time - both the movie and the song. This was from a bilingual movie - there is a hindi song that is exactly similar (search for Sara Pyar Tumhara) - nevertheless a beautiful song :D

you are my dream, my forever companion
you are the sun that rises in my dawn, and you are the star filled night.

In keeping with the festive season in Kolkata - here is the theme for the next couple of weeks - Bengali songs - all of them are my favorites - of course by no means is this going to be a complete list of my favorite Bengali songs - as always we will have to continue on this theme again.

The first song is just plain beautiful - and it has an equally beautiful Hindi counterpart - this version came many many years before the Hindi version.

Chandi Path - Birendra Krishna Bhadra

Posted by Nerdyy

And here is the first day of Ashwin - and for Bengalis it means Mahalaya which is the official start of the Puja season. Early in the morning Bengalis wake up to the traditional program of Chandipath as well as songs and music all signifying the impending arrival of Ma Durga. I remember the radio being switched on in our house early in the morning of Mahalaya, of course needless to add I slept through most of it :D - so here's a first - Sanskrit on the pages of Musikellishus. Happy listening and happy festive season (btw this also coincides with Navatri celebrated throughout much of India, and the festival of Dussehra in North India, on the tenth day of the month)

Happy Mahalaya everyone :D
